What is Online Counseling?
Online counseling is traditional talk therapy that is conducted using an online video conferencing platform. These sessions are much like face-to-face therapy, but they allow us to conduct counseling sessions with people almost anywhere in the state of New Mexico. Which can be a great option for those who live in remote areas, who can’t take time away from work or school for their counseling sessions, and those who travel frequently.
What Happens During a Session?
During your online counseling session, we can talk about a number of life challenges, set goals for self-improvement or overcoming daily struggles, and help you develop the tools and skills you need to face life’s difficulties head-on. These sessions are conducted through a web-based, HIPPA-compliant video conferencing tool utilized by Simple Practice. Simple practice is a web-based EHR service, that provides the telehealth platform so you would not need to download a program or software. Your therapist will send you the link to the virtual waiting room where you will be able to see your therapists in real-time.
Does My Insurance Cover Online Counseling Sessions?
It’s important to contact your health insurance company prior to starting counseling to ensure coverage for out-of-network providers. Depending on your plan coverage you may be able to receive full, partial, or no reimbursement for your out-of-pocket cost. So, we recommend you contact your insurance about your plan and ask them about your out-of-network benefits.
Am I a Candidate for Online Counseling?
Counseling may not be right for every person and we understand that may be the case. Your first appointment will allow you to talk about what is going on for you and how we can help you to overcome the struggle you are facing. From there, we can determine if online counseling is the right course of treatment for you. If online counseling is not the best treatment solution, we will offer outside referrals to you, so you can get access to more compatible services.
How can counseling help me?
There can be several benefits that you can receive from participating in counseling. Counseling can help to provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship troubles, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, and life transitions people have been able to find that counseling can be a considerable benefit and foundational in helping them to manage personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and the hassles of everyday life. My role as your counselor is to help provide you with a fresh perspective on a difficult problem or provide insight that can help point you in the direction of a solution. The benefits you obtain from therapy depend on how well you use the process and put into practice what you learn.
What if technology starts acting wonky during my telehealth session?
Technology can be a wonderful thing, but as we all have experienced from time to time. It doesn’t always effectively work especially when we need it to. Technical issues are a real possibility that we may encounter during our therapy sessions. We will work to adjust when needed if we are experiencing technology glitches. Some of the adjustments could range from changing video platforms, using phones while the video is on and the audio is off on the computer, shifting to phones entirely with no video, or in a worst-case scenario, we would work to reschedule the session. While it is often rare that technical issues happen that we would have to reschedule a session. There is always a possibility, and it is just important to mention it and for you to know that we will have tried to consider the most common issues and how to adjust.
Does counseling via video feel the same as counseling in person?
While video conferencing is something that many of us are probably familiar with since the pandemic. However, changes and new experiences can have the possibility of feeling different in the beginning because it is something new. As we venture out on this journey together once you have become familiar with the counseling process and started to form a good therapeutic relationship, can help to bring more comfort with telehealth sessions. Clients can often find themselves surprised by the work that they can accomplish when they’re doing telehealth counseling.
